    About the Trust and Safety Foundation (TSF)

    The Trust and Safety Foundation (TSF) is a 501(c)(3) non-partisan, charitable organization with the mission to convene stakeholders, share knowledge, and engage in activities that facilitate meaningful advancements in trust and safety. TSF aims to support, amplify, and develop trust and safety research, through supporting and facilitating research initiatives identified by stakeholders and partners. TSF serves as a bridge between industry researchers, academic researchers, the trust and safety professional community, the technology industry, civil society, and other public interest groups. 

    The Trust & Safety Professional Association (TSPA) is a 501(c)(6) non-partisan organization that supports the global community of professionals who develop and enforce principles, policies, and practices that define acceptable behavior and content online. TSPA provides administrative services for TSF. This position will be an employee of TSPA, but work full-time for TSF. 

    About the Position

    TSF is seeking a Managing Director to lead the development and growth of TSF. Working closely with the Executive Director and TSF’s leadership team, the Managing Director’s key responsibilities will be to drive organizational vision and strategy, spearhead fundraising, and provide leadership and management. Externally, the Managing Director will help build and maintain relationships with stakeholders and funders. Internally, in addition to providing strategic direction for the organization, they will oversee overall operations and management. 

    A critical component of this role will be fundraising; therefore, a successful candidate will have experience and a proven track record in fundraising for a nonprofit organization and/or research-heavy programming. The ideal candidate will also have experience in directing and managing organizations or programs that focus on research. The person in this role will work directly with and report to the Executive Director of TSF.


    Responsibilities

    The primary responsibilities of this include but are not limited to:

    Leadership and Strategy

    - Develop and execute organizational strategies and objectives;

    - Oversee overall operations of TSF, ensuring efficiency, profitability, scalability, and program quality;

    - Ensure organizational financial management through fundraising efforts, cost management, budgeting, and reporting;

    - Lead and mentor a high-performing team to drive operational excellence.

    Fundraising

    - Develop and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies aligned with organizational mission and goals with the aim of raising $500,000 in the first year;

    - Identify potential donors and funding opportunities; 

    - Cultivate relationships with diverse donor groups including individuals, corporations, and foundations;

    - Prepare and deliver compelling presentations to prospective donors;

    - Write and manage detailed grant proposals and Letters of Intent (LOIs);

    - Establish, track, and evaluate key metrics for fundraising;

    - Ensure compliance with all legal, regulatory, and ethical fundraising standards;

    - Collaborate with team members to design and implement communications in support of fundraising goals.

    External Representation and Stakeholder Management

    - Represent TSF externally and promote visibility of the organization, through attending and/or speaking at external events, including conferences, interviews, and other networking and related engagements;

    - Develop and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders groups, such as funders, peer organizations, or other strategic partnerships.

    Qualifications

    We are looking for candidates with the following experience:

    - At least 3 years of non-profit experience at a leadership level;

    - Demonstrated people management and leadership skills;

    - Direct experience in fundraising (preferably for non-profit organizations similar to TSF) with knowledge of nonprofit fundraising standards and practices;

    - Proven ability to attract and sustain donors through strategic fundraising approaches;

    - Experience in working collaboratively with a leadership team;

    - Ability to work with and manage critical stakeholders (Board of Directors, funders, and other partners);

    - Familiarity with the trust and safety ecosystem; 

    - Knowledge of research partnerships, programs, and/or processes.

    No candidate is expected to possess all the qualifications listed above. In areas where aptitude and/or interest are greater than experience, candidates are encouraged to propose a plan for support in their cover letter.

    Location

    This is a fully remote position. The selected candidate will be expected to be available during the workday (Pacific Time) and occasionally outside of those hours to meet with colleagues or stakeholders who work outside of the U.S. Pacific Timezone. Applicants must be authorized to work for a U.S. employer. We are unable to sponsor work visas. This position will require domestic (possibly international) travel, 3-6 times a year. 

    Compensation and Benefits

    The annual salary for this position will start at $200,000 USD. Other benefits include health insurance (medical, dental, vision), life insurance, flexible work hours, unlimited PTO for full-time exempt employees, and participation in a Simple IRA with employer match plan after one year of employment.
